Grant Description

Today, Impressionism is widely beloved. While artists like Degas and Monet have received due limelight, the French women who championed Impressionism, including Eva Gonzalès, Berthe Morisot, and Marie Bracquemond, have been granted considerably less attention and academic exploration. Nature was of great significance to the Impressionists and held particular meaning for

women artists. The development of parks and gardens under Napoleon III set a precedent in establishing outdoor spaces of greater equity for women. The artworks of the women Impressionists illuminate the crucial interrelationship between the environment, nineteenth-century femininity, and flânerie, revealing emerging, empowering opportunities for strolling Parisiennes
