My research project explores the role of films in nation-building and in enhancing state recognition for Kosovo and Palestine. Both are partially recognised states that have faced ethnic cleansing, structural violence, and actions meant to render their peoples invisible. They continue efforts for full recognition
globally. The research will critically interrogate the role of films in constituting narratives of nation-building, in contributing to the politics of recognition through funding and awards, and in raising international awareness through distribution via festivals. I analyse fiction films rather than
documentaries because of their boundless potential to canvas the ambition of nationhood.
