My interdisciplinary project will be the first substantial study of the representation of the late medieval merchant of England. It will examine patterns of mercantile representation in stained glass and monumental brasses in the parish churches of two great mercantile cities, York and Norwich, that have exceptional surviving evidence. I will
engage with studies on conventions for self-representation, the role of the parish in urban communities and the connections between local, national and international mercantile networks to investigate the expressions of individual and collective mercantile identity.
