Grant Description

The project aims to develop organic electrolytes that retain liquid-like ionic conductivity in the solid state, which we term state-independent electrolytes (SIEs).

Building on previous research that has developed anion-conductive SIEs, the project aims to develop SIEs that conduct cations, such as lithium and sodium, rather than anions. This change is necessary to open up applications as battery electrolytes. We aim to interweave computational modelling with experiments to guide design of the materials.

The student will be trained to synthesise state-independent electrolytes and characterise their conductivity and other materials properties, such as phase transition temperatures. Their experiments will be guided by simulations of the ionic conduction.
