This project aims to interrogate 'white' as a racial category, addressing the recent history of racialized hegemony in British culture by analyzing constructions and critiques of whiteness in British playwriting.
It will consider an extensive range of plays by writers both white and of colour in the period 1976-2020, years that were marked by both increased racial diversity and sustained and widely disavowed institutional and structural racism.
This research offers the first such comprehensive critique of whiteness in British theatre, developing scholarly understandings of the role played by British playwriting in the formation and contestation of racial power in Britain.
