Significant progress has been made in recent years in understanding soil-structure interaction and how this affects the isolation of buildings from ground-borne vibration. Research findings are at a stage where practicable design guidance is within reach, but a number of questions remain.
This project aims to apply fundamental engineering science to complete our understanding; in particular, by considering further the extent to which the construction of a foundation affects the ground vibration field.
This new understanding will be combined with recent developments in modelling buildings to enable the formulation of practicable design guidance, supported by analysis tools suitable for practitioner use.
