Grant Description

In the current era of Internet, video touches people's life in various forms- live streaming, video conferences, short-form user videos, TV shows, etc.

In the first half of 2023, video content constituted 65.93% of the overall internet traffic, marking a 24% increase compared to the same period in 2022 [1].

High- and ultra-high definition (UHD) videos are also more widely used in the marketing, thanks to the rapid development of sensor technologies. However, this explosion of video consumption also puts the transmission infrastructure under enormous pressure.

For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, some major VOD (Video On Demand) platforms like Netflix and YouTube were forced to throttle the quality and reduce the bit rate of video streams globally to alleviate the stress on broadband networks [2]. Therefore, improving compression efficiency is more crucial than ever to support the bandwidth-limited Internet.
