Grant Description

Peniarth 26 and 27ii are 15th century Welsh manuscripts significant for the high volume of prophecies and vaticinations scribbled into their parchment.

Despite some of the manuscripts' content being well-studied, very little research has been undertaken focusing on the manuscripts themselves and how they fit into the broader Welsh manuscript and vaticination traditions.

This project will weave together a material analysis of the manuscripts-considering palaeography and codicology-with a consideration of the language(s) used in each manuscript to determine the context and functionality of the prophecies featured in both Peniarth 26 and 27ii.

In this project, the two manuscripts will be deeply investigated through a series of studies: script and scribal hand analysis, the usage of mono- versus multilingualism, the use of translation, and the presentation and composition of each manuscript.

Additionally, through careful investigation of select transcriptions and translations of prophetic poetry and prose, this thesis will compare the vaticination present in Peniarth 26 and 27ii with the Welsh tradition, using philology to date its content.
