Grant Description

In the initial phase of Mexico's sexual revolution (1978-1986), art contributed to articulating the movement's core ideas and giving rise to a distinct aesthetic. This research focuses on the often-unnoticed contributions of the LGBT+ community to Mexico's cultural heritage. The study will examine artists from the Gay Cultural Circle through visual analysis, utilising insights from Visual

Culture Studies and Latin American Queer Theory. It will assess their artworks and cultural impact, correcting historical inaccuracies and enhancing understanding of their techniques, mediums, and symbolism. This research will further explore the depiction of sexual revolutions in narratives across Latin America during the same period,

while also examining the significance of terminologies related to sexual dissidence. As the research unfolds, it will explore this artistic legacy and document the dedication of those who advocated for equality, often at great personal risk.
