Analysing the speeches of legislators in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, this project will examine archives maintained by regional legislatures with gender as the independent variable to explore its impact on parliamentary floor participation, speech topics, and rhetoric.
The project aims to elucidate disparities in participation frequencies, topics, and rhetoric between female and male legislators, while considering covariates such as age, education, political experiences, political affiliation, and female descriptive representation.
Situated within East Asian and Chinese cultures, where features like 'state feminism' influence women's political engagement, this research will fill the gap left by studies mainly focusing on America, Europe, and African countries.
It will offer new evidence contextualised in East Asian and Chinese cultures, providing insights into gender effects on parliamentary behaviour, which was previously overlooked.
The project will also establish new corpora of parliamentary speeches, adapting methods and theories to Chinese contexts, ultimately developing a theory on how gender influences floor participation amidst the interplay of neoliberalism, Confucianism, and party-state systems.
