Active STUDENTSHIP UKRI Gateway to Research

Improved Detection of Gravitational Waves using Silicon Nitride Thin Films Under Cryogenic Conditions.

Funder Science and Technology Facilities Council
Recipient Organization University of Glasgow
Country United Kingdom
Start Date Sep 30, 2023
End Date Mar 31, 2027
Duration 1,278 days
Number of Grantees 2
Roles Student; Supervisor
Data Source UKRI Gateway to Research
Grant ID 2903348
Grant Description

The research in the project will be completed through a series of experiments with silicon nitride to design Bragg reflectors through dispersion techniques (such as atomic layer disposition and physical vapor disposition) traditionally used to create thin films. Experimental techniques such as scanning electron

microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) will be used to help produce the films and study their quality. Programs may be used to simulate the mirror coatings and their capabilities before being fully produced. This research will draw information from books, articles and experimental data produced in a laboratory, such as in gravitational waves, thin films and material

science.
