The aim of this project is to develop a new generation of miniaturised biosensors capitalising on several emerging technologies in semiconductor physics, photonics, and biochemistry.
The design is based on a lab-on-a-chip approach, where the optical excitation, sensing elements, and detectors are fabricated on the same compound semiconductor chip, requiring only electrical drive and read out. The building blocks of the sensor are photonic crystals, i.e. optical devices where periodic structures of dielectric materials are engineered to tailor the interaction with light, to create unique optical properties.
The project involves different aspects of the development of the biosensor, from the modelling of the different components to the characterisation of their performance using state of the art spectroscopy and electrical testing facilities.
