Grant Description

The project is devoted to refining calculations of magnetic properties of unstable nuclei. The student will use the nuclear density-functional theory, which she will learn in the group of her supervisor (prof J Dobaczewski), together with atomic codes, to improve the description of nuclear magnetic moments and determine reliable magnetic corrections to the atomic hyperfine structure.

The first physics cases will concern nuclei in the vicinity of closed proton and neutron shells, in the medium- and heavy-mass range, some of them relevant for atomic parity violation studies.

The project is part of the ERC Consolidator grant devoted to deriving the distribution of magnetisation and that of neutrons in unstable nuclei. It is co-funded by that grant and partly realised at CERN. When at CERN, Anu will perform calculations for atomic nuclei that will be investigated with a specially designed experimental setup, located at the ISOLDE facility.

She will also help during the online beamtimes, to get a better feeling for the experimental work on the experiment. Her calculations will be used to interpret the experimental data foreseen within the ERC project.
