Grant Description

The project has three main research objectives:

1. Characterise spatial heterogeneity of growth patterns of king scallop targeted by the Orkney dive fishery, determining how this relates to environmental variation.

2. Characterise age composition of selected mollusc species in stratified archaeological midden deposits, determining past exploitation patterns and relationships with environment.

3. Combine insights and data from 1 and 2 to project scallop stock productivity and responses to exploitation for future climate scenarios.

The overall aim of the project is to provide sound understanding of biological processes in inshore scallop populations to support monitoring, stock assessment and sustainable fishery management, now and into the future.
