White-tailed eagles were historically widespread across the British Isles, but human persecution and habitat alterations led to their extinction by the early 20th century.
Reintroductions have already happened in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Wight, with additional releases anticipated (England) or being considered (Wales). Little is known about what biodiversity was lost, rendering it unclear how similar the released Norwegian eagles are to the extinct UK population, and whether reintroductions should ideally draw from a different or wider geographic/genetic background.
Furthermore, ecological and genetic monitoring of white-tailed eagle introductions is currently not unified across the British Isles.
