Many experiments and commercial systems are very sensitive to their magnetic field environment, and erroneous fields can limit their function. Therefore, systems to control a magnetic field environment are highly desirable.
One method of doing this is to use a combination of an electromagnetic coil system and a High-permeability magnetic shield. The internal field produced by such a system can be described analytically and its parameters optimised using computational methods to give the desired field.
My research topic within this field is to see if the shape of the shield can become a degree of freedom, and be optimised by using additive manufacturing techniques.
