Having identified that food wastage is a key challenge in the United Kingdom, the need to reduce food wastage becomes imperative.
According to the charity Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), about 9.5 million tonnes of food waste was generated in the United Kingdom in 2018; 70 percent of which was intended for human consumption. Given this significant amount of wastage, food security may become threatened in the near term.
In addition, food wastage also negatively affects the environment via carbon emissions.
Although, the adoption of decarbonisation strategies is gradually increasing amongst UK farmers, there is the need to ascertain if these strategies have also helped to curtail food wastage. This is a key research gap that the proposed thesis aims to address.
