The project will focus on analysis of data samples from the LHCb experiment, to study the spectra of excited charm mesons and to search for tetra-quark states. The measurement will be the first analysis of B+ -> D-K+pi+ decays using the full LHCb data sample. The student will contribution to all stages of the measurement, from data processing and selection, through to a state-of-the-art amplitude analysis to fit for the different contributions of the B+ -> D-K+pi+ data sample.
The project will also focus on studies of Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs), collaborating with the detector development group at the University of Glasgow. The LHCb vertex detector (VELO) must be upgraded in the future to allow the experiment to take advantage of the high luminosity LHC. LGADs are one possible sensor technology choice for the VELO in upgrade 2, but research and development, in particular around concerns of the radiation hardness are required to show that it is a viable option.
