The project involves the investigation of catholytes (high positive potential electrical storage molecules) for redox flow batteries. Most redox flow battery systems involve non-aqueous or aqueous inorganic components. A fully organic system in which both the catholyte and anolyte are water soluble would be a major advance.
However, stable organic catholytes that are soluble in water are rare.
The project involves the synthesis of new catholytes, their testing using cyclic voltammetry and the ultimate fabrication of fully aqueous/fully organic battery systems.
