Grant Description

More-electric and hybrid electric aerospace systems offer the potential to deliver improved efficiency and reduced emissions and are a key part of the transition to low carbon flight.

However, both systems feature an increasing utilisation of large and flight-critical electrical loads which require the provision of a highly reliable supply of electrical power to ensure safe flight operation.

The use of reconfigurable and resilient electrical power system architectures is hence essential to meeting these demanding load availability targets.

The proposed PhD will investigate new resilient and reconfigurable aircraft power system architectures, embracing key enabling technologies such as solid-state, current limiting, protection and reconfiguration devices, and employing new grounding and protection solutions in order to achieve, low-maintenance, low-weight power system solutions.
