Grant Description

China Eximbank pledges to lend $60 million for Phase II of Kapichira Hydroelectric Dam Project On May 31, 2010, the Government of Malawi announced a plan to construct the second phase of the Kapichira II hydroelectric power station on the Shire river.

Phase II was designed add an additional 64 megawatts of generative capacity through two 32,000 kilowatt Francis Type water turbine-generator units and subsidiary mechanical and electrical equipment, as well as the design, procurement, installation, construction, debugging and commissioning of a 20km-long 132kV transmission line.

The total project duration as stipulated in the contract was 36 months.

According to a 2010 MOFCOM article, Malawi's Minister of Finance announced that China Eximbank would provide a $60 million loan for this project.

In the Sinohydro Overseas Projects dataset, the Kapichira II hydroelectric power station is also identified as being funded by China Eximbank.

However, no further mention of China Eximbank occurs in any sources past 2012, so for the time being we code this project as a pledge rather than an official commitment. China Gezhouba was the contractor responsible for project implementation. On January 17, 2014, the power plant was handed over.
