African Swine Fever (ASF) was detected in the Dominican Republic (DR) in July of 2021 and in Haiti soon after. The outbreak poses significant risk to the swine industries in the U.S. and in the Western Hemisphere at large.
This project supports an assessment of surveillance approaches and identification of factors preventing or promoting ASF spread in the Dominican Republic.
The project will also include evaluation of the role slaughterhouses may play in supporting ASF surveillance and the accuracy of oral fluids in the detection of ASF. This work will inform regional ASF preparedness and response efforts, helping to protect U.S. livestock interests.
