The Wildlife Disease Monitoring and Management Course combined classroom sessions led by subject matter experts with operational experience, including laboratory-based and field exercises where participants can apply their classroom learning in a live setting under subject matter expert supervision.
The course was designed to highlight the connection between Wildlife Disease Monitoring and Management concepts and the applied field techniques used to implement these concepts.
The course highlighted highly contagious animal diseases and transboundary animal diseases such as African swine fever, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), among others, which continue to impact communities around the world.
Biosafety and biosecurity protocols were a key component of the course, including review of the National Wildlife Research Center facility to demonstrate containment and management criteria for facilities that work with zoonotic pathogens and use of personal protective equipment.
