Peru is the second largest producer of asparagus and largest exporter of fresh asparagus with about 70% of total exports going the United States.
In cooperation with Argentinas National Food Safety and Quality Service (SENASA), APHIS completed a training workshop for plant health inspectors on the protocol for collecting and shipping insects diagnostic testing.
The goal of the workshop was to sample and identify live insects found on Peruvian asparagus bound for the U.S. market, which will help allow Peruvian producers to continue exporting this product to the United States.
