Grant Description

In April of 2006, the Chinese government pledged to build a 250 MW coal-fired power plant near the capital city of Dakar in Senegal, with financing provided by the Chinese government. The implementing company is China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC).

Work is to be completed in three years, and the plant is to consist of two turbines generating 125 MW a piece. This project may be tied because MCC was offered iron mining rights by state-owned Societe des Mines de Fer du Senegal Oriental (Miferso) following this project.

The current status of this project cannot be found, but the most recent report said the bid has yet to be published due to rising concern over the pollution a coal-fired plant would create.

According to sources, China was due to complete construction in 2011, however, no evidence of completion has been found. A Korean company has also funded a 250MW plant, which could indicate that China is no longer funding such a project.
