Grant Description

The Faculty Development in geoSpace Science (FDSS) opportunity aims to integrate geospace science--to includes solar and space physics and space weather research--into natural sciences, engineering or related departments at U.S. institutions of higher education and stimulate the development of undergraduate or graduate programs or curricula capable of training the next generation of leaders in geospace science. University of Delaware (UD) will create an FDSS tenure-track position in the space plasma group in their Department of Physics and Astronomy (DPA).

The FDSS hire will engage in research on cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, space weather, plasma physics, numerical simulation, analysis of ground based and spacecraft data, or related topics. The new hire will teach space physics classes and participate in development of graduate courses for the PhD programs in DPA and contribute to cross disciplinary connections with the PhD programs in Engineering and in the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

The project will foster participation of women and underrepresented groups through coordination with UD ADVANCE partnership, Delaware Space Grant, and Delaware EPSCoR projects.

This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
