FILE is seeking to scale a coalition of partners to influence a strong Advisory Opinion (AO) on climate change from the world's highest court - the International Court of Justice (ICJ) - that would break new ground on climate accountability, climate action, and climate justice globally.
Over the next year, the ICJ will gather evidence to inform their AO, we therefore have a critical window for countries to bring world-class legal arguments and compelling evidence that demonstrates the socio-economic and health impacts of climate change and the violation of international law losses in front of the ICJ.
FILE is requesting £2.5 million from Wellcome Trust over the next 12 months. This will enable critical research and evidence generation, a key pillar of the wider $25 million ICJ AO strategy. The key goals of this proposal are to: 1.
Collect and utilise legal, scientific, and economic evidence to be used in countries’ submissions that demonstrate the impact of climate change and the violation of international law, including attribution. 2.
Develop persuasive legal arguments & facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building to empower states in the ICJ proceedings.
