Despite their potential for impactful careers in science and technology, disadvantaged students often lack exposure to STEM opportunities and are under-represented in STEM education and careers. This lack of representation limits both individual potential and broader economic growth. In Brazil, the national Math Olympiad competition offers an opportunity to bridge this gap.
Studies have found that participation in the Olympiadwhich is open to all schools across the countryboosts math scores on standardized exams and increases the likelihood of enrollment in selective universities.
With support from Development Innovation Ventures, The Agency Fund will evaluate the impact of a 30-minute inspirational video designed to motivate underrepresented students to continue participating in the Olympiad and to pursue studies in STEM fields and careers.
This intervention targets the top 5 percent of students selected for the second round of the competition and aims to inspire students to change their beliefs and aspirations about their own abilities. Without this motivational intervention, many talented students may self-select out of STEM opportunities.
Researchers will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving 12,000 schools, where students in the treatment arm will be exposed to the video.
Outcomes will include Math Olympiad performance, national standardized exam scores, and university enrollment, as well as changes in student beliefs about STEM.
DIV will support key activities including formative research, video production, iterative testing of the video, and RCT implementation.
If the video intervention proves effective, it could be scaled across Brazil at a minimal cost through the Brazilian Math Olympiad organization, helping to increase diversity and close gaps in STEM education and careers.
