On April 18, 2002, Dr. Alpha T.
Wurie, Minister of Education Youths, and Sports, discussed the August 2001 commencement of the National Stadium Rehabilitation, and announced that the project would be completed by the end of April 2002. This project was funded with a Chinese Government grant, but the monetary value of this grant commitment is known.
China’s Ministry of Commerce reports that this project was completed at some point during calendar year 2002, but precise project start and end dates are unknown.
The construction of the National Stadium, which is a 30,000-seat stadium in Freetown, was financed by the Chinese Government during the 1970s.
Construction started on June 1, 1975 and ended October 31, 1978, and the stadium was handed over to the Sierra Leonean authorities on April 19, 1979. The stadium was repaired once before (in 1992) by the Chinese Government.
STAFF_NOTE: The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport existed but was then split up into the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
