Grant Description

Support the development of constitutions, laws, and legal systems that are procedurally and substantively fair, derived through participatory democratic processes, and consistent with international human rights standards. Both the substance of the law and the process by which it is developed must be legitimate and should be transparent.

Includes analysis and dissemination of jurisprudence, innovations, and best practices in constitutional and law-making processes. Includes programs that assist in strengthening systems and processes for developing and enacting laws. Supports efforts to end impunity and enable peaceful transitions to democracy.

Customary or religious dispute resolution mechanisms are included as laws and legal systems do not have to be written or formal to be legitimate.
