Grant Description

SAFEMed will lead anti-corruption interventions in the pharmaceutical sector by building the country's capacity for transparent procurement of drugs and commodities and a sustainable national medicines selection process.

The project will develop a procurement strategy to facilitate establishment of an efficient and cost-effective Central Procurement Body and will support adoption of evidence-based pharmaceutical laws, policies, regulations, and guidelines to address policy and legislative barriers.

SAFEMed will support the Ministry of Health in the creation of the health technology assessment (HTA) agency as a legal entity for selection of effective and cost-effective medicines for procurement and reimbursement and will adopt and institutionalize best HTA practices.

SAFEMed will also contribute to the creation of sustainable health pharmaceutical financing and advance rational pharmaceutical management and the supply chain system.

The solutions will support decentralization and integration of health services across national and sub-national levels and secure a stable supply of essential HIV, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), TB, and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) drugs and commodities at their best prices in order to improve access to medicines and health services.
