Grant Description

USAID/Mexico will continue supporting this activity to reduce social conflict associated with renewable energy projects, with an emphasis on wind and solar.

Expansion of renewable energy development in Mexico has experienced delays and resistance, impeding it from remaining on target to meet its international commitments.

Key factors contributing to these delays and resistance include misinformation, a poorly-designed regulatory process, corruption, and the inconsistent and often-delayed involvement of local communities.

The activity will assist the GOM create an environment conducive to renewable energy development by working on the design of new energy auctions to set requirements for participants to have completed social impact assessments, assign percentages of sales from energy auctions to create a trust fund for affected communities, and increase community participation in decision-making regarding solar and wind investments.
