USAID will support the improvement of the nutritional status of women and children under five years, with an increased emphasis on the '1,000 days period' which is between pregnancy and a child's second birthday.
This activity will work in 40 districts using multi-sectorial and community-based nutrition interventions and will concentrate on evidence-based, age-appropriate feeding practices (at the policy, community and household levels).
These include exclusive breastfeeding; maternal and newborn care (including treatment of child illness); infant and young child feeding; maternal nutrition; essential hygiene actions including safe drinking water and safe disposal of feces; healthy timing and spacing for pregnancy; and the dangers of smoking for mothers and their babies.
This activity also includes a cross-cutting component that aims to increase access to diversified, nutrient-dense food through home-based gardening and poultry farming.
