Grant Description

LARA aims to increase the reading skills of 1.3 million primary students and improve retention rates (decrease "drop-outs") in primary schools in 28 districts across Uganda.

LARA will achieve these aims by improving the capacity of the Ministry of Education and Sports to effectively sustain the rollout of the national early-grade reading model, which is being implemented in 85 of 112 districts, with an emphasis on teacher training and supervisory support.

Reading primers and instructional materials for primary one through primary four will be printed and distributed to all program schools.

To improve retention, LARA will include a safe-schools focus with particular attention to decreasing school-related gender based violence (SRGBR).
