Grant Description

In 2007, the Chinese Government provided a $500,000 food assistance grant to the Government of Zimbabwe.

The donation consisted of 4,000 tons of soybeans, which were intended to alleviate food shortages caused by droughts in Zimbabwe. The donation was also thought to boost the production of Olivine Industries, a vegetable oil producer in Zimbabwe.

The donation was officially delivered on June 30, 2009 at a ceremony attended by China’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Yuan Nansheng, to Zimbabwe's Finance Minister, Tendai Biti.

The increased level of vegetable oil production was hoped to help meet the requirements of Zimbabwe's Short Term Emergency Recovery Programme (STERP).
