In the interest of enhancing the engagement of the Swedish scientific community in the delivery of the European Spallation Source, the Swedish government have allocated in total 150 MSEK over the period 2021-2025 for in-kind contributions from Swedish actors to the ESS project.Institutions that deliver in-kind contributions to ESS build up competence and capacity for the equipment, software, staff and services required to get the facility up and running.
This creates knowledge that goes beyond technological development to the use of neutrons in various scientific disciplines.
They also develop deep, long-lasting collaborations with different parts of the ESS facility, and train young scientists and engineers in neutron techniques, equipment and science.In-kind values for different parts of the ESS project are specified in the ESS Cost Book, and this is the basis for the in-kind contracts between ESS and the universities.
The resources we apply for here enable us to reimburse the Swedish actors for equipment, software, staff and services in accordance with the contractual agreement.In-kind engagement from the Swedish community is a strategically important step to ensure maximal benefit and output from the ESS investment for the Swedish scientific and engineering communities.
We value the enhanced collaborations achieved through this mechanism highly.
