Wood formation locks away carbon long-term into woody biomass.

Key aspects of this process are absent from policy-relevant dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs), missing an opportunity for uncertainty reduction in forest carbon sink projections.

My suggested project will be the first to incorporate wood formation into a DGVM and evaluate the resulting change in carbon pools and vegetation dynamics beyond carbon.I will study tree ring growth dynamics using various modeling methods and data

  • I will use tree ring and national forest inventory data to create global maps of growth increment over the past 10 years globally, vital for global model validation. Secondly
  • I will use cell-scale wood formation models and Bayesian calibration to explore different hypotheses of woody growth. This also creates a setup for simulating wood quality and quantity.

  • I will evaluate this against the collected data, and study wood formation´s impacts of mortality and plant traits such as wood density on a global scale.Incorporating wood formation into a DGVM means that ring width and density will vary based on environmental factors and tree status. This enhances the realism of modelling the ecosystem´s carbon capture ability and resilience to local climate conditions. This project contributes to better understanding of vegetation carbon-pools, wood quality, and ecosystem resilience.
