Purpose and goal:
DigiDynoTorq aims to develop an Optical-Torsional-Rotary (OTR) torque transducer and its physics-based digital twin (DT) to improve the accuracy and reliability of rotary and dynamic torque measurements. Addressing challenges like torque ripples, high-frequency oscillations, and environmental effects such as temperature and vibrations, it integrates advanced metrology, FEA, and sensor data fusion to deliver real-time, traceable torque measurement for dynamic applications, particularly in EVs.
Expected results and effects:
DigiDynoTorq will advance non-contact rotary-dynamic torque measurement through the integration of the OTR transducer and DT technologies. Outcomes introduce improvements in calibration accuracy, real-time condition monitoring, and adaptive control for EVs, wind turbines, and advanced machining. The project will contribute to global metrology initiatives, fostering innovation and promoting performance, safety, and sustainability across energy, transportation, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Approach and implementation:
WP1 develops the OTR torque transducer using optical encoders for non-contact torsional angle and vibration measurements under dynamic conditions, validated through experimental calibration. WP2 focuses on the physics-based digital twin, validated with torque rig data. System versatility is investigated through modal analysis and system identification, while model reduction and real-time sensor integration enable continuous calibration, performance optimization, and predictive maintenance.
