Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

Grafoam AB together with Cemvision AB and LKAB will show that the technology exists to manufacture concrete floors reinforced with (2D) nanotechnology for demanding industrial applications, with >80% reduced climate footprint through the production chain. The main goals are to demonstrate the material´s performance and greatly reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. The project will confirm supply chains for commercialization. The project will affect objective 9, 12 and 13 in Agenda 2030.

Expected results and effects:

The project is an important step in the development of sustainable concrete for demanding applications. The challenge lies in replacing a large proportion of Portland cement with fly ash, slag and other residual materials from our industry, without compromising the concrete´s performance. The potential for CO2 savings in the Swedish market alone is far greater than what domestic air traffic generates today. The project will cast wear-resistant industrial floors with green concrete.

Approach and implementation:

Optimization of nanotechnology from Grafoam with new binders from Cemvision, at Luleå Tekniska Universitet. Production and material delivery of binders with ultra-low CO2 footprint and (2D) nanoadditives for casting industrial floors. Preparation of reference concrete and of ultra-low-CO2 concrete and casting of industrial floors. Evaluation of the cast floors in a busy industrial environment. Calculation of effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Communication of results.
