Grant Description

Purpose and goal: The present project’s goal is to improve industrial production efficiency by

reducing or eliminating time-consuming maintenance stops and interruptions in vehicle production. This will be achieved by reinforcing resistance spot welding (RSW) copper electrodes with graphene. This, in turn, will improve the durability and wear-resistance of the electrodes and reducing the need for time-consuming and costly maintenance and electrode replacement operations.

Expected results and effects:

The present project aims to implement innovative and enhanced materials in a new application. The project will establish suitable manufacturing methods for the electrode

component and examine and benchmark the result in a demonstrator by evaluating the potential in terms of production efficiency, cost-reduction and material use reduction. The project will contribute to establishing novel graphene-based materials in yet unexplored industries, i.e. the automotive manufacturing sector.

Approach and implementation: The project will be conducted in 3 work packages (WP). The first WP will focus on

manufacturing of the copper-graphene electrodes including selecting appropriate production methods and material characterization. The second WP will focus on resistance spot welding trials and evaluation, both in laboratory and industrial environments. The third WP will include project management and dissemination activities.
