Robotic Olfactometry for Security and Defense Applications

Purpose and goal:

The aim and objective of the project is to integrate a newly developed technology for the detection of poisons and explosives in air with our recently completed civil robot for chemical air surveillance and adapt this for defense applications. The air surveillance technology can be pointedly described as one of a kind

cloud-based "smell sense" that collects data via chemical monitoring robots placed at different locations to generate real-time scent maps for threat tracking and detection. Expected results and effects:

The project aims for increased ability to detect relevant substances such as explosives and poisons for the defense industry by building a new type of detection principle into the civilian gas and air robot, Gaston, launched in 2024. The new robot´s ability to track and identify different substances is expected to be significantly improved compared to before, although the services that Gaston now delivers on the market impresses with functions such as odor tracking and real-time response maps.

Approach and implementation:

The work is carried out in three work packages where 1) previous detector systems are adapted to gas defense applications 2) integration of the new technology in the civilian robotic system (Gaston) and 3) test and comparison of the different systems to identify new performances and find adjustments.

The results are compiled in reports from the above work packages. Input from the defense industry, via the best possible Diana accelerator, is taken in continuously to influence development.
