Purpose and goal:
The aim of the project is to improve polymer composite filaments for additive manufacturing (FDM), with particular focus on military needs, such as protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI), directed energy weapons (DEW) and ionizing radiation. The ability to print complex geometric shapes with high energy absorption materials enables improved protection effectiveness in several military applications.
Expected results and effects:
The project has potential to enable flexible and localized production of radiation protection components and strengthen Sweden´s self-sufficiency in critical material supply chains. In addition to an improved supply capability, advanced filaments that protect against radiation can enable new capabilities in several areas. Eg. drones can be built with a shield against EMI, heat, laser and directed energy and/or absorption of radar waves that arise either internally or from external influences.
Approach and implementation:
The project will be carried out in parallel for different materials. The first step is to set a requirement specification for material properties together with military actors. Next step is to develop new modified material recipes, adapt the production equipment for the new recipes, test run, evaluation and quality assurance. Final step, in case of successful outcomes, is to make the product ready for sale by producing documentation and other product components such as coil, carton, labels.
