Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The aim of this project is to improve the surface properties of battery foils. The surface properties have a very large influence of the function of batteries. An improved contact between the active material and the battery foil in combination with less wear has potential to improve the performance and lifespan of today´s and future batteries. The overall goal is to increase the understanding and create the conditions required to develop the next generation surface treatment for battery foils.

Expected results and effects:

The expected results and effects of the project are a better understanding of how different environmentally friendly and energy efficient methods can improve the surface properties of the battery foil. By improving structure and chemistry on the surface, we expect a better (lower) contact resistance, better adhesion and reduced problems with, for example, corrosion.

Approach and implementation:

We plan to start with a larger screening at lab level where we select the processes that demonstrate the best results for further investigation. In the extended investigation, we will utilize the consortium´s unique competencies to manufacture battery foils with different surface properties to perform button cell tests where we can verify our progress at lab scale.
