Purpose and goal:
The feasibility study aims to explore the potential of using international standards for social impact assessments as a tool to increase the social benefits associated with the extraction of metals and minerals. These standards cover social aspects such as access to housing, education and community services, the preservation of cultural heritage and human and indigenous rights.
Expected results and effects:
The project aims to create tools and methodological support to more systematically consider and manage social values in dialogue with the local community. The hope is that this can affect Talgas and, by extension, other industry players´ opportunities to attract funding and create acceptance for their activities in a Swedish context.
Approach and implementation:
The project will include a 1) strategic analysis identifying case studies and compiling relevant research in the field; 2) A gap analysis that aims to identify possible gaps and make visible the possible challenges and added value of also applying the standards, in addition to Swedish legislation; 3) A needs analysis, which aims to highlight both the need for more guidance in social sustainability and the need for more locally adapted support, and 4) A proposal for a research project.
