Purpose and goal:
The aim of the study is to analyze how data from connected vehicles can be used to identify dangerous locations in the road network. The plan is to study vehicle speeds in the road network and map road segments with speed violations and the occurrence of heavy braking. The goal is to be able to build a dashboard for road authorities to reports risk indicators in the road network, as well as to propose measures to prevent road casualties.
Expected results and effects:
Our expectation is that the implementation of the project will pave the way for new data-driven methods to evaluate road safety within the road network and, by extension, reduce the occurrence of road incidents and road user casualties. We also hope that the new method developed within the framework of the project can be used as a universal method for evaluation traffic safety in the road network and connect it to the work within Vision Zero.
Approach and implementation:
Review of municipalities´ current working methods regarding decisions on road safety measures in the road network. Analysis of observed speed within the road network via data from connected vehicles. Mapping of routes with large deviations from the posted speed.
Review of vehicle data regarding heavy braking. Comparison with reported road traffic accidents. Selection of locations for follow-up via camera equipment, following road user movements and supplementary field studies around location-specific causes. Presentation of site-specific measures and closing workshop.
