Purpose and goal:
The goal of this project is to investigate the feasibility of reducing the number of steel alloy compositions used in automotive construction, in order to increase efficiency, sustainability, economy and production robustness throughout the value chain of the automotive lifecycle. This is accomplished by replacing a number of steel alloy compositions used in the construction of the frame by a single novel alloy able to satisfy all property requirements of the various frame components.
Expected results and effects:
This is a feasibility study for a larger materials development project, with the aim to reduce the number of alloying compositions in automotive manufacture. The reduction in alloying compositions will contribute to adoption of modern steelmaking techniques (DSP, mini-mill), as well increase process design efficiency and simplify supply chain management. Finally, a reduction in alloying compositions will simplify scrap handling and recycling.
Approach and implementation: The project is divided into work packages WP1-WP4 with deliverables L1-L6: WP1 / L1. Evaluation of one-alloy concept potential WP2. Alloy design • L2: 3-6 potential alloying compositions for the one-alloy steel concept WP3. Demonstration of feasibility • L3: Evaluation of feasibility at a laboratory level
WP4. Reporting and administration • L4: Report of main findings. • L5: A project plan for a full-scale project. • L6: Consortium for a full application.
