Purpose and goal:
The world is facing a growing geriatric population with an increasing need for smart andsafe medical implants that osseointegrate rapidly. The project contributes to thisthrough further development of unique processes and equipment suitable for implants. These are based on low-temperature atmospheric plasma in combination with coating ofnanohydroxyapatite. The intention is to speed up and improve the biointegration ofimplants enabling shorter and improved healing.
Expected results and effects:
The project aims to develop unique atmospheric plasma processes and equipment forimplants, to clean and increase the adhesion with nanohydroxyapatite without damagingthe materials. The processes are expected to replace wet chemical processes, resultingin worse sustainability and working environment, and at the same time generate bothhigh cleaning levels and process speed. The project is expected to generate increasedgrowth and excellence as well as processes relevant to other sectors.
Approach and implementation:
The project is a collaboration within Eureka SMART between Germany and Sweden andis expected to last for 2-years. The work is divided into 6 work packages, 4 of which aretechnical. The results will be evaluated with respect to surface chemistry, adhesion, biointegration, sustainability and costs. Finally, the results will be evaluated in ademonstrator.
