Zero-Energy Internet-of-Everything (ZE-IoE) in 6G Networks Using Backscatter Communication

Purpose and goal:

The purpose of this project is to develop and demonstrate a lens-based, zero-energy IoE (ZE-IoE) device for 6G networks, aiming to achieve massive, cost-effective connectivity. This includes overcoming key challenges through hardware-software integration, feasibility studies, modeling, and simulations. The goal is to create a 24 GHz demonstrator that showcases ambient backscatter (AmBS) communication, utilizing commonly deployed OFDM and FMCW waveforms as ambient signals.

Expected results and effects:

Expected results include identifying use cases for ZE-IoE in 6G backscatter communication, increasing energy efficiency, and enabling ultra-low power communication. The project develops a 24 GHz Rotman lens-based retroreflective antenna with modulation capabilities and proposes optimal energy harvesting methods. A demonstrator will showcase practical communication with 6G base stations, aiming to raise the TRL from 2 to 5 for market evaluation.

Approach and implementation:

The project comprises four work packages: 1) Use Case Definition and Requirements, 2) Lens-Based ZE-IoE Design and Simulation, 3) Algorithm Development for Ambient Signal Modulation/Demodulation, and 4) Hardware Prototyping and Demonstration. This structure supports achievable objectives, leveraging the team’s expertise in electromagnetics, RF design, and signal processing. Scientific advisors assist in WPs 2 and 3, with our RF prototyping specialist crucial for the WP4 demonstration.
