Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The goal of the INSPIRE project is to develop an innovative rearing device using Galleria mellonella to convert unrecyclable plastic waste into valuable resources like feed and bio-fertilizers. By combining biological and technological innovations, we aim to reduce plastic waste, support sustainability, and advance the circular economy, aligning with Sweden’s environmental goals.

Expected results and effects:

The project aims to develop a prototype rearing system through in-silico modeling, designed to efficiently convert plastic waste into valuable products such as proteins, lipids, and biofertilizers by Galleria mellonella. This innovation aims to reduce CO2 emissions from plastic incineration by up to 67%. The broader impact includes advancing sustainable waste management, fostering the circular economy, and supporting eco-friendly food production systems.

Approach and implementation:

The project focuses on developing an in-silico prototype of a rearing system that uses G. mellonella to convert unrecyclable plastic waste into valuable products like proteins, lipids, and biofertilizers. The project will begin with modeling and iterative design of the rearing system, followed by hypothesis testing to refine its efficiency. The goal is to create a sustainable solution that reduces plastic waste and supports a circular economy, with potential for industrial-scale application.
