Sustainability and preparedness are closely interconnected in the context of food production.
Sweden´s food system is vulnerable: much of the food is produced abroad, and a large part of our food production relies on feed and fertilizers transported here via long logistical chains.
The food system is built for cost efficiency around a few central nodes, with minimal storage and short shelf lives, meaning that disruptions can have far-reaching consequences. Primary production and food industry also face significant challenges related to environmental sustainability.
FORCE (Center for Food Resilience and Competitiveness) will drive system change forward through shorter and longer applied collaborative projects, as well as continuous policy work. In a resilient Swedish food system, products based on grains, beans, and peas will play an important role.
By enhancing and implementing our knowledge of these value chains, we can strengthen the foundation of Swedish food production and increase the system´s competitiveness and resilience. In FORCE, technical expertise will be integrated with expertise in risk and policy instruments.
Together with a wide range of food companies and the public sector, we will build a long-term transdisciplinary research center to ensure a Swedish food system that is profitable in peacetime and sustainable in times of crisis.
